Dear Students,

The Philosophy Department affirms its support for the Movement for Black Lives, Indigenous Peoples, and the full diversity of people of color. We stand in solidarity with the recent national and global protests against police brutality, and we condemn the systemic racism and violence that has taken the lives of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Tony McDade, Rayshard Brooks, and so many others.

We affirm our commitment to anti-racist study and teaching. Although the canon and practices of our discipline have historically been white (and male) centric, our conviction is that Philosophy offers indispensable methods and tools for the recognition and critique of racist, classist, and gender-based structures of differential power, coercion, violence, and domination. We are committed to deploying these tools as a core aspect of our educational mission, inside and outside the classroom.

In coming semesters we have plans to initiate teach-ins and discussions among students, faculty, staff, and administrators on issues of institutional racism and the systemic networks of domination of which racism is a part. We will actively advocate solutions to combat the racism and other hierarchies of domination that exist within educational practices. We encourage feedback, especially from students. We look forward to hearing your thoughts, needs, and constructive criticisms. We hope to hear your voices and gain your witness in our classrooms, lecture-discussions, and colloquia as we pursue this transformative work.

Hello! Thank you for visiting the Philosophy department webpage. As you know, the COVID-19 situation has brought on many rapid changes. However, our desire to promote student learning and success has not changed! Please take a moment to read the following information items:

The Philosophy Department Office:

As of March 17, faculty and staff have been asked to work remotely. This means that the Philosophy department office will be closed. Because of this, phone calls do not give you the most effective way of contacting us; if you do need to call, though, the number is (310) 243-3636.
